I'm stuck on Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS. Please help?

On the Deku Tree part, where you enter the part where there's a thing that shoots nuts at you. You need to deflect, I know, but whenever I put my shield in front of me, I always lose health and die. What am I doing wrong?
